Leopold I, Holy Roman Emperor

Leopold I (1640-1705), Holy Roman Emperor from 1658 until his death.

Reign

Leopold’s reign was shaped by two threats. From the east, the Ottoman Empire pushed deep into Habsburg territory, besieging Vienna itself in 1683. The city’s relief by a coalition army led by Polish King Jan Sobieski was a turning point — afterward, Habsburg forces pushed the Ottomans out of Hungary entirely.

From the west, Louis XIV pursued French expansion at every opportunity. Leopold spent much of his reign in coalition wars against France, including the War of the League of Augsburg and the War of the Spanish Succession.

Leopold was a patron of music and opera — he composed some himself — but his historical role was primarily as a dynastic and military strategist, holding together a sprawling, multi-ethnic empire against enemies on two fronts.

In the novel

Leopold and his court appear in connection with Jack Shaftoe’s storyline, as the siege of Vienna and its aftermath play a role in Book 2’s events.
