Book 3: Odalisque Chapter p.772: Versailles Date: early 1688

Versailles (pp 772–773)

Eliza writes to Leibniz from the court of Versailles, detailing her sudden elevation to the nobility and the political maneuvers of the French court.

“SOPHIE”Sophia of the Palatinate was the Electress of Hanover and a formidable intellectual who maintained a lifelong correspondence with Gottfried Wilhelm Leibniz. As the granddaughter of James I, she was eventually named heir presumptive to the British throne, making her the link between the Stuarts and the modern House of Windsor.

“Louis XIV” — Known as the “Sun King,” Louis XIV transformed France into the dominant European power through absolute monarchy and a series of aggressive wars. His court at Versailles was designed to domesticate the nobility by forcing them to compete for his favor through elaborate rituals.

“Sghr” — Stephenson’s annotation: “Qwghlm is a region of the British Isles composed of two islands. On this page, Eliza’s letter names one as Sghr, leading me to wonder what native name the other island might have.” The name refers to the craggy, unpronounceable geography of the fictional islands, which serve as a recurring setting in Stephenson’s work.

“the Qwghlmian Church… founded before the Roman Catholic Church was established” — This reflects the historical existence of “Celtic Christianity,” which developed in the British Isles somewhat independently of Rome before the Synod of Whitby in 664. Father Édouard de Gex seeks to exploit these ancient origins to claim the islands for the Catholic interest.
